DISTRIBUTION OF FREE DIGNITY PACKS
A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY
LOCATION: Nepal
DATE: 2023
In October 2020, UK registered charity Pipal Tree supported Lily Katuwal in setting up her social enterprise “Lily’s Leaves” in Nepal. The social enterprise provides training and employment to vulnerable young women in Kathmandu, including some deaf women. They learn a range of skills in activities such as tailoring and silver jewellery manufacture. Sales from products are reinvested in training and in the Lily’s Leaves social welfare programme. The social enterprise also receives grants and donations that allows it to manufacture and distribute free school rucksacks and dignity pads (reusable sanitary pads) to girls in the poorest schools in south Nepal. This reduces school drop-outs and undermines child marriage that, although illegal, is endemic within the “Terai” region (Nepal’s southern plains).
