Pyramiden, located on the archipelago of Svalbard in the Arctic, is a former Soviet mining town that embodies a unique blend of stark Soviet architecture and haunting derelict beauty. Established by Sweden in 1910 and sold to the Soviet Union in 1927, Pyramiden was once a thriving coal mining settlement.

The architecture of Pyramiden reflects the utilitarian ethos of Soviet design. Buildings are characterised by their stark lines, concrete construction, and uniformity, showcasing the pragmatic approach of Soviet urban planning. Despite its remote location, Pyramiden boasted facilities such as a cultural center, swimming pool, and even a monument to Lenin, serving as a microcosm of Soviet society in the Arctic wilderness.

However, following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Pyramiden faced economic decline and eventual abandonment. Today, the town stands frozen in time, with buildings slowly succumbing to the harsh Arctic climate and nature reclaiming its territory. The derelict beauty of Pyramiden lies in its eerie atmosphere, where empty streets and abandoned buildings evoke a sense of nostalgia and intrigue. I count myself super fortunate to have been able to explore its decaying structures, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of Soviet ambition and Arctic exploration.
