On May 9th, Russia and several former Soviet republics commemorate Victory Day, a pivotal date in their collective history. This day marks the surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945, when Soviet forces seized control of Berlin, effectively bringing World War II in Europe to an end. In Russia, particularly in Moscow, Victory Day remains a deeply significant and emotionally charged occasion. It is celebrated with grand parades and ceremonies, with the focal point being an impressive display of military might, as tanks, missile launchers, and other hardware roll through the streets in a spectacle of power and pride.
This photo story delves into the human side of this event, shifting the lens from the grandeur of the parade to the faces of the spectators lining the streets. It captures emotion, pride, nostalgia, curiosity, and perhaps even ambivalence while providing a nuanced social context. Through these images, this visual story seeks to explore the cultural and historical significance of the day and the complex ways in which the event’s glorified spectacle resonates with those who gather to witness it.
